Unlike the & quot; Dialogs & quot; Plato, where, often, on behalf of his friend and teacher Socrates Plato expresses his own views, "Apology" can be considered the only truly historical work of Plato: this is evidenced, in particular, by its proximity to the memories of Xenophon, in no way pretending to be philosophical originality and therefore more reliable, from the point of view of history. As you know, in 399 BC. e. Socrates was accused by the Athenian democrats of the corruption of youth and the denial of the gods. Despite the courageous, full of dignity and conviction in his right defense, the philosopher was sentenced to death and without hesitation drank a bowl of poison, rejecting the offer of friends to arrange for him to escape from prison. & quot; Apology & quot; (the full name is Socrates' "Apology") is the defensive speech of Socrates in court, many years later reproduced by Plato from memory (probably based on his own records). The unusually lively and expressive Platonic text bears the imprint of the personality of Socrates - the ideal philosopher, misunderstood and rejected by contemporaries, ready to defend his convictions to the end. & quot; Apology & quot; It contains a huge number of allusions, understood only by those who are familiar with the Athenian realities of the time; It mentions a number of statesmen of Athens (mostly from the hostile camp of Socrates), the sophists, who, without any justification, blamed the philosopher, as well as people whose names seemed to say a lot to contemporaries, but turned out to be preserved for the history only thanks to the memories of Plato. In his speech, Socrates also refers to the non-preserved comedy of one of his main enemies, the playwright Aristophanes. Thus, the rootedness of the Apology & quot; in the historical context serves as additional evidence of its reliability.
