Вскоре после сошествия Святого Духа и сразу же после ревностных молитв Петр и Иоанн, идя в храм на богослужение, увидели у Красных ворот хромого несчастного, нищего калеку лет сорока от роду. В жизни он не видел ничего, кроме боли и страданий. Этот несчастный давно желал увидеть Иисуса, чтобы получить исцеление, но он был беспомощен и находился далеко от тех мест, где трудился Великий Врач. Вняв его мольбам, некие добрые люди наконец отнесли его к воротам храма, но, прибыв туда, он узнал, что Тот, на Кого он возлагал все свои надежды, предан жестокой смерти.
Горькое разочарование этого человека пробудило к нему сочувствие тех, кто знал, как долго он надеялся получить исцеление от Иисуса. С тех пор его ежедневно приносили к храму, чтобы прохожие, сжалившись над ним, подавали ему милостыню на его нужды. И когда Петр и Иоанн проходили мимо, несчастный обратился к ним за милостыней. Ученики с состраданием отнеслись к нему. И весь народ видел его ходящим и хвалящим Бога, и узнали его, что это был тот, который сидел у Красных дверей храма для милостыни, и исполнились ужаса и изумления от случившегося с ним".
Иудеи были изумлены тем, что ученики могут творить такие же чудеса, как Иисус. Они считали, что Он мертв, и ожидали, что с Его смертью должны прекратиться все чудеса. Но сейчас перед ними ходил человек, который сорок лет был беспомощным калекой, а ныне он безмерно счастлив оттого, что уверовал в Иисуса. Его ноги теперь не болели, и он свободно передвигался.
Увидев изумление на лицах людей, Петр спросил их, чему они дивятся и ужасаются, словно апостолы своей силой сотворили это чудо. Петр заверил их в том, что исцеление свершилось благодаря заслугам Иисуса из Назарета, Которого они отвергли и распяли и Которого Бог воскресил из мертвых на третий день. "И ради веры во имя Его, имя Его укрепило сего, которого вы видите и знаете, и вера, которая от Него, даровала ему исцеление сие пред всеми вами. Впрочем я знаю, братия, что вы, как и начальники ваши, сделали это по неведению; Бог же, как предвозвестил устами всех Своих пророков пострадать Христу, так и исполнил".
После того, как апостолы силой Иисуса Христа совершили это чудо, люди собрались в храме, и Петр обратился к народу, стоявшему в одной части храма, а Иоанн в это время говорил с людьми, собравшимися в другой его части. Апостолы открыто говорили о великом злодеянии иудеев, отвергнувших и предавших смерти Князя жизни, но делали это так, чтобы не подтолкнуть народ к безумию или отчаянию. Петру хотелось приуменьшить, насколько возможно, их жестокость и вину, допуская, что они сделали это по неведению. Он объявил им, что Дух Святой призывает их теперь покаяться в своих грехах и обратиться, что для них нет никакой надежды спастись, кроме как через милость Христа, Которого они распяли; лишь через веру в Него их грехи могут быть смыты Его Кровью.
Арест апостолов и суд над ними

Им казалось, что их любимая доктрина находится в опасности, а их репутация под вопросом. Многие из служителей храма, в том числе и начальник храмовой стражи, были саддукеями. При их содействии начальник стражи арестовал обоих апостолов и поместил их в темницу, поскольку было уже слишком поздно, чтобы расследовать это дело в тот же вечер.

Soon after the descent of the Holy Spirit and immediately after zealous prayers, Peter and John, going to the church for worship, saw at the Red Gate a lame wretched, poor beggar forty years of age. In life, he saw nothing but pain and suffering. This unfortunate person long wanted to see Jesus in order to receive healing, but he was helpless and far from the places where the Great Physician worked. After he listened to his entreaties, some good people finally took him to the gate of the temple, but when he arrived there, he found out that He, on Whom he had put all his hopes, was betrayed by cruel death.
The bitter disappointment of this man awakened to him the sympathy of those who knew how long he had hoped to receive healing from Jesus. Since then, he was brought daily to the temple, so that passers-by, taking pity on him, would give him alms for his needs. And when Peter and John passed by, the unfortunate turned to them for charity. The disciples treated him with compassion. "Peter and John, peering at him, said: Look at us ... there is no silver and no gold from me; but whatsoever I have, I give unto you: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. "
When Peter spoke of his poverty, the face of the lame drooped, but immediately it was illuminated by hope and faith when the apostle continued the phrase. And, taking him by the right hand, he raised; and suddenly his feet and knees became stronger, and he jumped up and began to walk, and entered with them into the temple, walking and jumping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and they recognized him that it was he who sat at the Red doors of the temple for charity, and was filled with horror and amazement at what had happened to him. "
The Jews were astonished that the disciples could do wonders like Jesus. They believed that He was dead, and they expected that with His death all miracles would cease. But now a man was walking in front of them, who was a helpless cripple for forty years, and now he is immensely happy because he believed in Jesus. His legs were not aching now, and he was free to move around.
Seeing the astonishment on the faces of people, Peter asked them what they marvel and are horrified, as if the apostles by their power created this miracle. Peter assured them that the healing was accomplished due to the merits of Jesus of Nazareth, whom they rejected and crucified, and whom God raised from the dead on the third day. "And for the sake of faith in his name, his name has strengthened this one, whom you see and know, and the faith that came from him gave him this healing before you all. But I know, brethren, that you, as your rulers, have done it by ignorance; God, as foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, suffered Christ, so He did. "
After the apostles performed this miracle by the power of Jesus Christ, people gathered in the temple, and Peter addressed the people standing in one part of the temple, while John was talking to people gathered in the other part of the temple. The apostles openly spoke of the great atrocity of the Jews, who rejected and betrayed the death of the Prince of life, but did so in such a way as not to push the people to madness or despair. Peter wanted to minimize, as far as possible, their cruelty and guilt, assuming that they did it in ignorance. He told them that the Holy Spirit urged them now to repent of their sins and to say that for them there is no hope of salvation except through the mercy of Christ, whom they crucified; only through faith in Him their sins can be washed away by His blood.
The arrest of the apostles and the trial of them
A sermon on the resurrection of Christ and the fact that by His death and resurrection He will raise all the dead from the graves at the Second Coming, greatly troubled the Sadducees. It seemed to them that their favorite doctrine was in danger, and their reputation was in question. Many of the temple attendants, including the head of the temple guards, were Sadducees. With their assistance, the chief of the guard arrested both apostles and put them in prison, because it was too late to investigate this matter that very evening.
