И если от Джастина Бродрика вы упрямо ждали новый "Streetcleaner"... что ж, вы практически дождались. Тринадцать лет молчания наполнили мозг Godflesh (едва ли у этого механического чудовища есть душа) давно забытыми образами, из комнат с лучшими видами на Апокалипсис.
"Мир, освещаемый только огнем" - книга американского историка Уильяма Манчестера, посвященная Средним векам и подающая их в максимально неприглядном виде: десять веков стагнации человечества, пропитанные кровью, слизью и смрадной гнилью; вдохновленные бесконечной каруселью насилия под пристальным взором христианской церкви. И я бы решился утверждать, что дух и атмосферу литературного произведения в этом альбоме сумели передать практически идеально, если бы не одно важное "но". Тот самый "Streetcleaner" все же был по сути своей релизом куда более неприглядным, варварским, действительно средневековым. В нынешней компании восьмиструнной гитары Бродрик мыслит более современно, да и играет драйвовей. "A World Lit Only by Fire" чуть чище, чуть быстрее, чуть энергичнее легендарного предшественника. И, конечно, совсем не так шокирует. Хотя болты и гайки в начинке остались примерно те же: размеренные и предельно грубые риффы, шелестящие ударные, дурманяще плотный бас, ор заядлого хардкорщика в роли вокальных партий и ни малейших попыток мелодического украшательства. Средина релиза, конечно, выдает в обновленном Godflesh банду, готовую хотя бы на минимальные компромиссы: упомянем башкотрясный хит "Curse Us All", брутально-рок-н-ролльную "Carrion" и "чистоголосую" "Imperator", живо напомнившую что-то из Fear Factory. Зато начало и заключительная часть релиза, безусловно, беспощадны в лучших традициях. Почти дроуновая "Towers Of Emptiness" может причинить вполне ощутимую, физическую боль - не подобными ли вещами славны были британцы в начале девяностых? А уж воздействие универсального обнулителя сознания "Forgive Our Fathers" и вовсе переживут немногие... Пожалуй, нас всё же заставили побыть в роли одного из тех грешников, чьи тела, вознесенные над охапками хвороста, освещали мир на несколько мгновений. Что ж, вот и финальный триумф, окончательно убеждающий в важности и нужности данного реюниона даже немногочисленных уцелевших еретиков, которым только и остается молиться о том, чтобы не превратиться в кричащие факелы в следующий раз. Godflesh is back. They returned to a huge fat snake, lazily moving the body through the sewage, chasing before itself whole hordes of dirty, shabby rats. The monstrous shepherd and his devilish flock ... Returned to declare the industrial revolution unfinished, and the flimsy human flesh - still infinitely far from divine perfection. And they will improve it, according to their understanding, for a whole hour, and even longer - if you are lucky to snatch the version with bonus tracks (dub remixes of songs from the main program).
And if from Justin Brodric you stubbornly waited for a new "Streetcleaner" ... well, you almost waited. Thirteen years of silence filled the brain of Godflesh (hardly this mechanical monster has a soul) long forgotten images, from rooms with the best views of the Apocalypse.
"A world illuminated only by fire" - a book by the American historian William Manchester, dedicated to the Middle Ages and submitting them in the most unattractive form: ten centuries of stagnation of mankind, impregnated with blood, mucus and stale rot; inspired by an endless carousel of violence under the watchful eye of the Christian church. And I would venture to say that the spirit and atmosphere of the literary work in this album managed to convey almost perfectly, if not for one important "but." The very same "Streetcleaner" was still in fact a release much more unsightly, barbarous, really medieval. In the current company of the eight-string guitar Brodric thinks more modern, and plays a drive. "A World Lit Only by Fire" a little cleaner, a little faster, a little more energetic than the legendary predecessor. And, of course, not so shocking. Although the bolts and nuts in the filling remained approximately the same: measured and extremely rough riffs, rustling drums, densely thick bass, or hardcore hardcore in the role of vocal parts and not the slightest attempts at melodic decoration. Among the releases, of course, is a gang issued in the updated Godflesh, ready at least for minimal compromises: we mention the bash-shattering hit "Curse Us All", the brutal-rock'n'roll "Carrion" and the "clean-haired" "Imperator", vividly reminiscent of something from Fear Factory. But the beginning and the final part of the release, of course, are merciless in the best traditions. Almost drow "Towers Of Emptiness" can cause quite tangible, physical pain - were not such things glorious were the British in the early nineties? And the impact of the universal consciousness observer "Forgive Our Fathers" will survive only a few ... Perhaps we were still forced to be in the role of one of those sinners whose bodies, lifted over armfuls of brushwood, illuminated the world for a few moments. Well, here is the final triumph, finally convincing the importance and necessity of this reunion of even a few surviving heretics, who only need to pray that they will not turn into flashy torches the next time.
