Альбом является первым независимым релизом Nine Inch Nails, вышедшим после окончания контракта с Interscope Records. The album contains 36 instrumental compositions recorded during ten weeks in the autumn of 2007. The recording of the album was attended by Trent Reznor with old studio staff Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder.Ghosts I-IV, conceived first as a mini-album of four compositions, is presented in the form of four mini-albums with nine tracks in each. The tracks have no titles, there is only a number in the song list coming with the volume number, and the corresponding images in the booklet.
The album is the first independent release of Nine Inch Nails, released after the end of the contract with Interscope Records.
